When Will Buck’s Fuse Run Out?

At some point, Buck’s frustration will boil over. With the Orioles’ most recent string of heartbreaking losses, Showalter’s club is once again fading into irrelevance.

First of all, the accumulation of inexcusable errors and miscues are cause for concern. From rookie Blake Davis’ crucial 2-run error on Wednesday to the questionable decisions by John Russell, the third base coach, the Orioles are making many of the same kind of mistakes that have haunted them for the past 13 seasons.

Mistakes are to be expected from such a young and inexperienced team, but the recent escalation in mental miscues is inexplicable.

Showalter came to the Orioles emphasizing fundamentals. From day one, Buck preached the basics and the importance of having all 25 members of the ballclub on the same page.

It’s like everyone is reading a different chapter, much less the same page.

As if the recent struggles of the players on the field weren’t enough, the growing number of coaching personnel issues is a head-scratcher.

Pitching coach Mark Connor’s resignation was shocking, to say the least. With a blossoming young pitching staff, Connor hopped ship for ‘personal reasons.’ Connor explained that he couldn’t adequately handle the demands of his job.

You’ve got to wonder what goes on behind closed doors between Buck and his staff.

Most recently, John Russell was temporarily demoted from third base coach to bench coach. Showalter explained that this decision was the result of a couple of factors unrelated to Russell’s windmill of arm at third base.

Ken Rosenthal explained on Sports with Coleman just recently that Russell’s break from coaching third base is puzzling, to say the least.

Regardless, the recent turbulence may be just that: turbulence. This rough patch for the O’s fearless leader may not last but it’s time to start wondering if Buck is beginning to lose a grip on this ballclub.

Not before long, Buck won’t be able to take it any longer.

One thing is for sure, Buck will not go gently into that good night. At what point will we begin to see the cool and calm manager burst at the seams? That point may be approaching faster than we realize.
