Ravens wrap up a most successful season

The Ravens season concluded with the annual “State of the team“ address and the top priority was to see if the team can work out a long-term contract with franchise quarterback and Super Bowl MVP, Joe Flacco.  The Ravens have the one-year franchise tag as an option for Flacco, but the goal is to get him locked up for the long haul..They will only use the franchise tag on their signal caller.

“I’m coming away thinking that we can get a deal done,” General Manager Ozzie Newsome said Thursday, also highlighted contracts the team has worked out over the years with Ray Rice, Haloti Ngata, Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs and even Jonathan Ogden.  The organization has a history of getting the deals done when it matters the most . They never seem to miss a beat.

Newsome said that they came “very close to a deal,” and Owner Steve Bisciotti indicated that the offer would have made Flacco one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.. Rather than take the offer the Ravens presented last season, Flacco elected to play out the duration of his deal and put negotiations on hold until after the season. With a Lombardi Trophy now on his resume, Flacco has joked that he’s going to come banging on Bisciotti’s desk looking for the biggest deal possible.“That’s what we wanted,” Bisciotti said. “We wanted to see him do this, and he did.

“I don’t see us winning the Super Bowl making the negotiation any more difficult than it would have been had we gone out in the first round of the playoffs; that might have been more difficult. So, we both know that we want each other, and it’s up to Ozzie and [Flacco’s agent] Joe Linta to work that out.”

The Ravens have until March 4th of this year to work out a long-term deal with Flacco, or else they will have to use the franchise tag on him. Applying the  tag could then buy the two sides extra time to work out a contract, just like they did previously with Rice and Ngata.  While there are questions about the kind of deal Flacco will get – and how long it will take to get completed – it was clear during Thursday’s session that they see Flacco being in Baltimore for his entire career, and that they liked the way he handled himself on the big stage.

Bisciotti said. “We don’t need a screamer. And I said that I believe that the fans will be rewarded because of Joe’s demeanor, and Joe will be appreciated for it if he wins. And we believe he’s going to continue to win, so Joe proved that you can win being like Joe. We’re thrilled, because we never thought we needed to change the way Joe was like some of [the media] or like some of our fans.  “Now, he gets to say, ‘I told you so.” It is all something that has been a joy to be a part for Flacco in his first five seasons as the Ravens QB, now as the team turns the page into the new era, he will be the “General,” of this team, that is how franchises are successful with a elite QB or at the very least one who can be great.

A parade to end an incredible journey for the Ravens

It has been twelve years since the Ravens captured the Lombardi trophy, now they had a chance to celebrate it with their fans. It was a joyous day in the city of Baltimore, as the victory parade started at City Hall and concluded at the home of the Ravens – M&T Bank stadium. As the players came up onto the stage the crowd was electric and future hall of famer linebacker Ray Lewis got in one last dance before coming up to the stage. The crowd went ballistic as he did his famed “squirrel” dance, roaring so intensely that you barely heard yourself think. Approximately 90,000 people were inside the stadium and 200,000 folks were present for the whole event. The event brought many people together, and they came from many different parts of Maryland.

105.7 the fan was at M&T Bank stadium and caught up with fans before the team arrived. Some traveled many hours just for the event and one of those fans was James Martinez from the Eastern Shore he said that“It’s incredible, it is something that I have been waiting for a long time, I’ve been telling everybody every year with Flacco being here, with a lot of these rookies coming in, that they’re going to do, they’re going to do it. And they went and did it for the fans they did it for themselves, their families. Like I said everybody is proud of them, they could not have done a better job this year.” There is so much dedication to this Ravens franchise, words cannot explain it. From the younger generation to the older fans, it is something that has everybody in a joyful mood. To be able to share with their friends and family, that is something priceless that can never be taken away.

Through all the adversity the Ravens journey ended with a Super Bowl, and celebrating it with the fans of the city was the ultimate. It was a day that was filled with families letting their children miss school to be a part of history. “It is a cultural learning experience for the children” stated by a fan who brought his three kids down to the event. It is not every day that a team wins a championship and gets to have the opportunity to celebrate with their fans. This moment is not just special for players but the hundreds and thousands of fans who have cheered for the team every step of the way. It was even more evident when Ed Reed was walking down the streets of Baltimore and letting the fans touch the Lombardi trophy as he walked by. That is the definition of the 12th man. To some people it was a team of uncertainly and inconsistency but in the city of Baltimore and in the state of Maryland it was their team that they were never giving up on.

Ravens Bring Home the Super Bowl trophy

The Ravens were an unstoppable force that, even a power outage in the biggest game of the year, could not stop; slow down maybe, but that is it. Here is N-F-L commissioner Roger Goodell on the power outrage.

The Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34-31. The purple and black have battled everything this year and now they bring home the Lombardi trophy for a second time and first since 2000. The team bent but did not break in the game. They held a 22-point lead before the power outage but watched it dwindle in the second half. Quarterback Joe Flacco would not let it happen  after he threw three first-half touchdown passes to cap an 11-TD, zero-interception postseason which ties Joe Montana and Kurt Warner for most TD passes in a single postseason.

How is that for Elite folks?  When Flacco was interviewed on the NFL Network about being the general of the team now, he stressed it is a team effort, yes he is a huge part of it but the Ravens would not be in the situation if they did not have great teammates and coaches. Flacco took home the Super Bowl MVP, which is well deserved and he did have elite game.

The AFC champion Ravens (14-6) have improved to 2-0 in the big game. They also won the championship in 2001 when linebacker Ray Lewis was the game’s MVP. Lewis was not a major factor this time, but he was a center of attention, playing in the final game of his 17-year career before retiring.

The “mighty”49ers struggled in the first half and Baltimore led 28-6 after Jacoby Jones opened the second half with the longest kickoff return in a Super Bowl, his eyes glancing up at the video board to watch himself sprint to the end zone. The 49ers showed they were capable of a comeback in their previous game: They trailed by 17 against the Atlanta Falcons before winning the NFC championship game.

Now the final bell rings on Lewis’ storybook ending, an ending that could not have been any sweeter than with this Super Bowl victory. The difficulties they had experienced created a true team tightness within the locker-room, and now it has paid off… The Ravens are the 2013 Super Bowl Champions.

Ravens and 49ers are ready for the Big Game

The Superdome is about to rock on Sunday.  The Ravens and the 49ers are ready to make the place electric and hit the gridiron to play Super Bowl XLVII.  It will be the biggest game of these players lives, some of them will not get another chance at it again.  One of those players is Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis… Yes, he’s the ONLY Raven with a Super Bowl ring already, but with a pending retirement after this game, the players want to send him out the ”proper” way.  Lewis stated that the whole organization is focused, “I saw a total change, not just in our players, but our entire staff. We are all dialed in. It became so infectious in our locker room, and it was like, ‘What else can we do?’ The players – we kind of took it over for ourselves years ago. We took it over ourselves, where we kind of took the coaches out of the meetings, saying, ‘Coach, we got this. We are going to go through everything you’ve taught us already, but when we leave here, we are going to have a meeting with just ourselves.’ The attention to detail picked up so quickly. I think those meetings are one of the reasons why, collectively as a group – offense, defense and special teams – why we are playing at a high level.” He has a vision with the team that they will walk off that field with the Lombardi trophy.  All the players on the team will have to work together to accomplish the same goal.  It is the motive that drives the players on the franchise that is “the team, the team, the team.”

Lewis also addressed the impact of this game, and how he will feel after, “When I walk off that field Sunday, I will probably be most proud of the impact I’ve had on so many men’s lives. The game will fade one day, numbers will fall, accolades will wash away, but there is nothing better than changing someone’s life. To be in Baltimore for 17 years, and getting the opportunity to walk off the biggest stage ever, and to one day look back – and still today, I listen to men walk by men and say, “Thank you for helping me. Thank you for changing my life. Thank you for showing me the right way.’ I think that is the ultimate reward.” The Ravens as a team have a lot on their side for this match-up.  Momentum, inspiration, leadership and certainly experience in big games.  How will they contain Colin Kaepernick? Hopefully with the knowledge of DC Dean Pees and the leaderships of Lewis, Suggs and Reed..  If the Ravens walk out of the dome as the Super Bowl Champions it will be forever more and their lives will never be the same ….
