Robinson is Honored

The legendary Brooks Robinson was honored with a larger than life statue in center field at Camden yards, his third statue unveiling “That is wonderful out there,” Robinson said after the ceremony. “I’ve admired some of the other ballparks that I’ve seen the statues in but Mr. Peter Angelos’ generosity here is great. Toby Mendez, I thought he did a fantastic job on all those statues out there.”

To go along with unveiling of the statue, there also was a pregame ceremony on the field that had the club’s 8th sellout, cheering and screaming- and it also afforded them one more chance to honor the club’s legends. The fans eruptedrwitha standing ovation and upon his arrival to the field, they cheered again when a smaller version of the bronze sculpture was unveiled in front of the pitcher’s mound.  The Orioles stood in their dugout watching, and so did the Red Sox. Most longtime Orioles fans know something about Robinson’s Hall of Fame statistics, and they were outstanding. He played 23 seasons with the Birds capturing 16 Gold Gloves, a record total for a position player. He also played in 18 All-star Games and won the American League Most Valuable Player Award in 1964, and the World Series MVP for his memorable performance in 1970. He was inducted on the 1st ballot to the Hall of Fame in 1983. Robinson still follows the Orioles very closely and talked on Saturday about how this year’s edition has him thrilled with its success.

Buck on Dylan Bundy for next season

The 2012 Orioles are doing something that has not been done since 1997 and that‘s having a winning season.  Now that September is just a few days away usually it gives teams the versatility to call up players from there minor league systems.  Those payers have a great opportunity to prove that they belong here or in the near future.  One of those players is Pitching phenomDyland Bundy, who is Baseball’s top prospect. But you will not see him this September. Buck Showalter said “I want him to pitch his butt off in Bowie and help them win an Eastern League Championship.” Bundy is only 19 years old but he shows poise and dominates in his starts.  The young star did not allow an earned run in thirty innings of Low A ball, then had a 2.84 ERA in 12 starts in High A and on Tuesday night made his third start in Double A Bowie, allowing just two earned runs while pitching between 5 1/3 and 6 innings in each outing.
When you have a situation like this Buck always says “Try as you may you can’t screw up the good ones.” That is absolutely true.  If you have an elite player that player will just continue to get better and just keep going up.  It is not surprising that players are coming up at the age of 19-20 years old.  They play sports their entire life the only thing that is different is when you finally get to the “Majors”  - where everybody is elite. Even though Bundy will not be in an Oriole uniform this September he has a terrific chance to be a part at the start of next season. It appears to be the prudent and correct choice, especially with a 19-year old pitcher you do not want to risk any major injury with a top prospect.  Fans of the Birds must remain patient. and enjoy 2012 before you think about who they will bring up next. Bundy’s day will come soon enough…
